Word Puzzle Strategy Tips
1. Start Smart with Optimal Opening Words
Your first guess is critical. Use a balanced word with common vowels (A, E, I, O) and consonants (S, T, R, N, L). Avoid duplicate letters on your opening guess so you can gather maximum information. Popular strategic openers include words like STARE, ADORE, or SLATE—they test many common letters in different positions.
2. Use Gray Letters for Quick Elimination
Gray tiles eliminate possibilities immediately. Once you know a letter is not in the word, stop guessing it. Keep a mental (or written) list of eliminated letters. This narrows your search space dramatically with each guess.
3. Track Yellow Letters and Reposition Them
Yellow tiles are your second-most valuable clue: the letter exists in the word but in the wrong position. On your next guess, place that letter in a different position. Combine yellow letters strategically to test multiple positions simultaneously.
4. Leverage Green Letters Immediately
Green tiles are solved positions. Keep them fixed in your remaining guesses and focus on solving the other four positions. This reduces your unknowns rapidly.
5. Think About Word Patterns
English words follow patterns. Common endings include -ED, -ER, -LY, -ING. Common starting patterns include ST-, CH-, TR-, SH-. Use these linguistic patterns to narrow down possibilities when you have partial information.
